We’ve all experienced the thrill of being part of an amazing team, if only for a fleeting moment. Trust, collaboration, and that unstoppable feeling - it’s magic. So, how do you design a winning team? Is it more about raw talent or chemistry? How do you scale that design across an organization so productivity soars and your culture thrives?
Last month my niece Tori graduated from Firefighter school. Her accomplishment now marks the 3rd generation of firefighters in the Moore family and we are so proud of her! My dad, my brother and now his daughter all in service to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Tori's desire to be the best was inspiring. Her self-discipline carried her to the finish line and beyond. But it was her commitment to her classmates’ success and the brotherhood/sisterhood of being a firefighter that captured her heart. The encouragement and support and trust the class had in one another was their connective tissue of success. The group pushed further as a team, beyond what any 1 individual could do alone and all were successful.
Great teams thrive on 5 things:
- a compelling mission and common purpose
- a robust sense of belonging
- a feeling of safety to be themselves
- openness and honesty
- encouragement and accountability
When leaders allow for these 5 essentials and they know what motivates and drives their staff, great teams and organizations can emerge.
